We are reaching out to ask for your support with regards to our charity event, Sun Valley Tour de Force, which takes place on July 26-28.
In order to conduct the event, we need permit approval from two Blaine County entities; Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) as well as Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA). The permit from ITD (to close parts of Highway 75 for participants to run their cars at no speed limit) was confirmed earlier this year, however, we were notified yesterday that our SNRA permit to host spectators at a designated site has been rejected.
We find this incredibly unfortunate and disappointing, considering that SNRA has approved the permit in 8 consecutive years from 2008 #8211; 2016. SNRA lists the following points for rejecting the permit: 1) Failure to demonstrate public need for the event, 2) Failure to demonstrate a need that the event must be accommodated on forest service land and 3) environmental concerns for the specific spectator area (sagebrush specifically).
None of the above screening criteria have ever been mentioned throughout our correspondence with Ed Cannady from SNRA, and we have always been given the impression that we would receive our permit. This is a turn of events, and a sudden one, in our opinion. We are aware that members of The Drug Coalition have sent e-mails, letters and made phone calls to both SNRA as well as ITD, in addition to contacting other partners and sponsors that we work with. We suspect that SNRA #8217;s decision to reject this permit comes as result of The Drug Coalition #8217;s campaigning against us, although SNRA claims that this is not the case.
We kindly ask that you express your support for our event by calling and/or e-mailing our local SNRA staff, based on some of the suggested points:
SVTDF supports local charities and local businesses (hotels, restaurants and other businesses have some of their busiest days throughout the event) #8211; the event supports the whole community
The location for this event on Highway 75 is ideal for spectators/participants. Drivers want to run their cars at Phantom Hill
Organizers have proven great success in organizing similar event in the past and work closely with local law enforcement on how to safely manage it and respect the local environment, including sage brush
Many people have made arrangements to visit Sun Valley to participate and spectate the event #8211; both drivers, spectators as well as sponsors

Affordable Housing
City leaders are wringing their hands over the problem of affordable housing as if it’s some impossibly complex issue. It’s not. It’s just that it’s all their fault and they don’t like the answer.
Housing is simply a function of supply and demand. City leaders have placed self imposed artificial restriction on supply, while out of town investors willing to buy property that they will occupy for only a few weeks a year, drive up demand. Unless you think the local government can single handedly provide public housing for every low income resident of Blaine County then the only solution will be to change this equation.
Real estate developers and builders are simply rational business owners that will consistently make understandable choices. They want to produce a product for the lowest cost that they can sell at the highest price. There is nothing mysterious or evil about this and every single business should, and does, strive to do the same thing.
So if a piece of property can be built out for roughly $300 a square foot and hopefully sold for 2x that, then a hypothetical 10,000 square foot building can either provide 4 Penthouses for $1.5 million each or 20 studios for $300,000 each. According to current banking standards someone earning only $38,000 a year, 40% less than the US median, can afford a studio at that price.
So, problem solved, right? Wrong, because our politicians have imposed steep density penalties on developers that might want to build this many units on a single property, even as those same politicians pay lip service to affordable housing. Height restrictions, impact fees, Floor Area Ratio restrictions, and in lieu parking fees all drive up costs for building the solutions to our housing problems. Add to that insult an affordable housing requirement fee that the government extorts so that they can waste on ill advised and financially bankrupt endeavors that so far have only undermined the natural economy for housing.
Why do they do this? Well, besides being ignorant government rule makers that can’t help but think the only solution to problems is to make even more foolish rules? One complaint is that if developers are allowed to build smaller, denser units then out of towners will just buy them up until the prices become unaffordable again. Ok, this gets to the ‘demand’ side of my argument.
While I do believe the demand for small studios is much lower from rich tourists, there will definitely be enough demand to drive up prices. So let’s put our penalties in the right place. On demand.
Vancouver, Canada instituted a 10% real estate transfer tax on all purchases by non residents. Or we could steeply raise property taxes on all property and then increase the Homeowner exemption to over $1million dollars or $2million, thereby targeting non locals in way that is already provided legally.
And if we must involve government in some form of deed restriction then instead of discriminating based on income why not focus on residency. If someone moves to Ketchum and, god forbid, becomes successful, should we be disqualifying them from buying property? Ideally thats exactly what we should be promoting, not discouraging. So why not impose restriction on local source of income instead of how much someone earns?
But just as these solutions are easy to understand they are also vociferously opposed by the same people that claim to want to address the problem. They want affordable housing but they don’t want density. And they don’t want taller buildings, never mind that beautiful mountain towns like Chamonix and Courchevel, etc., all over Europe, all have plenty of 7+ story buildings. Local fossilized NIMBY’s eschew solutions in favor of rantings on how things used to be in the good old days. Or complain that developers should not be allowed to build high density, small units because it’s undesirable or inhumane. No one is forcing anyone to buy or rent property. If something is built that is undesirable the seller will simply lower the price until it sells. Hence affordability! Those complainers are certainly not helping anyone by removing choices or making people homeless.
The fact is these problems have simple solutions. Politicians need to take stock and stand up to their own constituents and their own policies that are preventing the very things they say they want.

Round House
A long time ago I was in France and I went into a local supermarket. I asked a clerk if the store carried a particular brand I was looking for. His answer was that they used to carry that product, but they would always sell out, so now they don’t carry it anymore.
This encounter informs my feelings on many of the interactions I have with the Sun Valley Company. I was acutely reminded of it when I learned of SVCo’s latest choice to close Averell’s for evening hikers.
If you live in town, then you are probably aware of this decision and possibly of the fateful night that preempted it. You may have seen some embittered comments in the Mt Expresses Miscellany 2 section.
A few weeks back, 3 large, separate parties ascended by foot or ski to the Round House on a Friday night to celebrate in the bar area. It has been an increasingly popular endeavor to hike up to the bar after the lifts close and drink wine and eat fondue, which does not require a reservation, as the regular dining area does. On this fateful night the place was completely overrun. Additionally one party, in particular, brought their own beverages and food for their celebration. Understandably, this did not go over well with staff. When this same group broke out the fireworks and insisted they had every right to do so, despite staff requests to cut it out and not burn the place down, well, let’s just say that seems to have been enough to justify ending this honored activity once and for all.
Now, I certainly do not condone bringing your own food or drink to a bar. Thats just rude. And while I think it’s pretty unlikely that fireworks were going to light anything on fire in sub zero weather, if staff or proprietors ask you not to do something, anything really, on the premises, then it’s pretty shitty to talk back and say you have every right to do whatever the hell you want like some entitled shit heel. That’s just not right.
But I was actually there that night. Downstairs and not a member of the said, disruptive group upstairs. And I can tell you that while the staff did a truly heroic job serving as many as they could and as fast as anyone could expect, they were woefully understaffed. Furthermore I know for a fact that at least two people leading these different groups had called the Round House to say that large groups were planning to ascend that night, and that they should staff up accordingly.
But it seems that the Company has been actively trying to discourage this popular activity. So instead of staffing up they have been withdrawing resources in an effort to thwart its growing popularity.
And that’s what is so damn enervating about many SVCo policies. If something gets too popular they just go ahead and cancel it outright. Can you imagine the Knob Hill claiming that the bar area was getting too popular and so they were forever closing it? That’s nonsense and just simply bad business. But if you bring that logic to Sinclair Inc their response feels something like “if you don’’t like it, then buy your own damn mountain!”
I can tell you that no one would wants to hump their own beer and wine up to Round House on their backs. But when getting service is a real problem then customers will likely make other arrangements. That heroic bartender I talked about, I think Jason is his name, could have sold $15 whiskeys as fast as he could pour them just about all night long, but whoever is in charge up there simply could not care less.
That’s a real problem. When a business is not motivated by profit then they aren’t particularly concerned with the wants and needs of their customers. They have other priorities. When you ask someone at Sun Valley why they do something a particular way, the answer is usually, “because that #8217;s the way we always have done it!” Which is really the worst answer ever. Wouldn’t matter if that particular way has sucked for 80 years they are sticking with it!!
So I am very sad to hear that hiking to Averell’s will not be allowed at night any longer. That night was incredibly fun with a fantastic group of athletic people that were having a great time. My group was enthusiastically lauded by the staff that told us they appreciated our patience and good cheer. We did our best to appreciate them as well with handshakes, back pats and generous tips, as everyone should. Because they did a great job in tough conditions and still made it look fun.
But I sincerely hope that after some regrouping and reorganizing, that whoever is in charge of the Round House can figure out a way to capitalize on the fact that many customers are lining up to give them money and all they need to do is figure out a better and more efficient way to take it.
